The 4.17.5 (80) to 1.8.6 (36) triumph was the highest winning margin in the history of the hybrid game, eclipsing Australia's 38-point victory in 2006. The visitors put the result beyond doubt early in the match, booting four 'overs' (worth three points) and an 'under' (worth six points) before the home team registered a major score. They jumped to an 18-point quarter-time lead and were never challenged, extending the margin further at every change. Not only was Ireland's use of the round ball far superior, but they also more than matched Australia in the areas they were meant to be deficient. They tackled with vigour, weren't intimidated by the bigger Australian bodies and never stopped running. Steven McDonnell starred for the Irish in front of goal, booting an under and four overs, with lively forward Leighton Glynn contributing an under and two overs, and newly recruited Sydney Swan Tommy Walsh three overs. Winning skipper Stephen Cluxton dominated, collecting 38 disposals as the goalkeeper. Further afield, retired Sydney Swan Tadhg Kennelly and Brisbane Lion Pearce Hanley provided damaging run and silky round-ball skills.
